RAM stands for Random Access Memory.

This is somewhat of a misnomer as it is better described as rewritable memory. RAM in general needs power to retain content, so RAM is volatile memory, as opposed to Flash memory or ROM, which does not require power for data retention. RAM is a part of every computer system, even though technically, a small amount of work can be done by just the CPU, using it's internal memory (CPU registers) as temporary, yet very limited data storage.
